My heart bursts because so many clients have become lifelong friends, and that is where the magic happens.
Your engagement session is a celebration of love, and what better way to make it even more special than by including your furry best friend? If you’re a dog parent, having your pup be part of your engagement photos adds joy, personality, and a unique touch to the shoot. In this blog post, we’ll dive into the many reasons why bringing your dog to your engagement photoshoot can create lasting memories and, even, elevate your photo experience.
Your dog is more than just a pet—they’re part of the family! Including your pup in your engagement session brings out your true personalities as a couple and highlights the bond you share with them. Plus, dogs have a way of adding fun and spontaneity to the shoot, ensuring that your photos are genuine and full of life. There is usually never a dull moment when we are petting, chasing and trying to get them to smile as well!
One of the best parts about bringing your dog to your engagement session is the chance to capture authentic, candid moments. Whether your pup is giving you a playful lick, gazing at you with love, or just lounging nearby, these are the little moments that make your relationship unique. These natural interactions will shine through in your photos, creating memories you’ll treasure forever.
While it’s exciting to bring your dog along, a little preparation goes a long way in ensuring a safe and enjoyable experience for both you and your pet! It’s never recommended to bring your dog when it’s over a hundred degrees outside, and having them standing on the concrete for any period of time. Even cars with AC don’t provide them with enough cool down to keep them safe. Here are some tips to help your engagement session with your dog run seamlessly:
When planning your engagement session, be sure to pick a location that is dog-friendly. Parks, beaches, or open fields are great options where your pup can roam freely without restrictions. We want them to remain near us, but with enough room to explore a bit and come back when we need them. If your dog is shy or needs a calm space, consider a quieter area with fewer distractions.
Don’t forget to pack the essentials for your dog’s comfort and safety! Bring a leash, water, treats, and their favorite toys to keep them entertained. You’ll also want to have waste bags handy to clean up after your pup. A well-prepared dog will help keep the session running smoothly.
Remember that dogs, especially younger or more active pups, may get tired or distracted during the shoot. Usually I recommend we let the pup explore around the location a bit, so they can get their scent and wiggles out, and then we get to taking some photos that are posed and some candid. This will keep your dog happy and ensure that they stay engaged for as long as we can!
Adding a few playful props can make your engagement session even more fun. Consider dressing your dog in a cute bandana that says “Save the Date” or “I Do Too!” You could also bring along a favorite toy or a sign featuring your wedding date. These little details will make your photos more personal and memorable.
In addition to couple shots, don’t forget to capture a few portraits with just your dog. These can be some of the sweetest moments, showcasing your bond with your pet. Whether it’s a snuggle shot, a playful pose, or even just a few of your dog alone, these images will be priceless.
Having your dog at your engagement session isn’t just about the photos; it’s about having fun and making the day even more memorable. Dogs bring a sense of playfulness and unpredictability to the shoot, which can help ease any nervousness and keep you focused on enjoying the moment.
Many couples feel nervous or shy in front of the camera, but having your dog there can help you feel more at ease. They’re a familiar presence that brings comfort, making it easier for you to be yourselves during the shoot, and who can resist smiling when there is a dog around, not me!
Your dog is a big part of your life, so why not include them in one of your most important milestones? The saying that we get dogs for part of our lives, but we are their entire life, has stuck with me since I heard the phrase. My husband and I have always wanted to include our dogs in life events because it’s important that we get to spend all of their time with us. Bringing your dog to your engagement session ensures that they are part of this special chapter in your love story, and the memories you create together will last a lifetime.
