From the view of a stone hillside balcony overlooking the entire downtown area of Cabo San Lucas in September, I couldn’t help but marvel at the perfect backdrop for Mike and Chelsea’s destination wedding at The Sandos Finisterra Resort in Mexico. The azure waters of the Sea of Cortez melted into a cotton candy sunset sky as we watched the sunset from the balcony on top of a hillside, creating the kind of scene that destination wedding dreams are made of.
As their chosen destination wedding photographer, I had the privilege of documenting their entire celebration – from the serene morning preparations to the sparkler-lit farewell. This experience highlighted exactly why choosing your own photographer for your destination wedding makes such a undeniable difference in preserving your memories.

Full Photography Coverage for Your Entire Wedding Day
While the resort offered their standard photography package of two hours, Chelsea and Mike knew their special day deserved more, and they wanted to capture every bit – the still, romantically posed and created moments, as well as the little, often overlooked moments in between. Our day began at 11 AM, with Chelsea and her bridesmaids sharing mimosas and laughter in their ocean-view suite. A meaningful bit of time that would likely not be captured if the timing allotted was shorter for a wedding package.

Beyond the Package Limitations
The resort’s standard photo package typically includes ceremony coverage sometimes and a brief portrait session. But consider what we captured beyond those basic moments:
- Getting ready moments filled with anticipation
- First look by the iconic Cabo Arch
- Sunset portraits along the beach
- 365 Views from a balcony built into the rock hillside
- A spa day before the big day
- Late-night festivities under the stars
Making the Most of Destination Elements
Being familiar with destination wedding photography, I knew exactly how to work with Cabo’s famous light, incorporating the natural elements that make Mexico’s coastline so spectacular. We planned portrait sessions around the golden hour, used the dramatic rock formations for creative compositions, and captured the vibrant local culture that made their celebration unique. This allows me to get a fresh look for my clients, who will have unique photos – and not your run of the mill photos that they usually produce for each couple they work with.
There is also something to be said for getting to experience a new area through a new person’s perspective. This is why I arrive a couple days before your wedding day, so there is plenty of time for me to scout out the area and plan timing for photos. (this may or may not be done by the pool, with a cocktail and a Kindle in hand……..)

Why Investment Matters
While resort photography packages might seem cost-effective initially, they often limit your coverage to a fraction of your celebration. Your destination wedding is more than just a ceremony – it’s an extended celebration with your closest loved ones in a breathtaking location. These memories deserve thorough, professional documentation from someone dedicated to telling your complete story.
